This advanced certification training is a must for drivers, pilots or others who regularly move dangerous contents by highways, railways, airways and waterways. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is a branch of the DOT designed to prevent accidents and injuries involving commercial vehicles. As part of that mandate, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) require commercial drivers to undergo a health check every two years to make sure they are fit to operate a large truck.
To satisfy the requirements in 49 CFR 391.41, all commercial drivers (including HAZMAT transporters) must be examined by a healthcare professional who is part of the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME).
NRCME Medical Examiner Training
While drivers must be certified to transport HAZMAT, the NRCME program trains doctors who perform DOT physicals to certify commercial drivers. This class is critical for ensuring driver safety and Department compliance.
Becoming a DOT medical examiner involves several steps. First, the doctor must register with the FMCSA and complete an NRCME training covering DOT medical guidelines. Students can choose from several online courses and exam preparation for NRCME certification.
After the examiner training, participants must pass an exam to get certified and be listed on the FMCSA National Registry. This allows them to evaluate drivers and issue the medical certificates required for employment.
Although NRCME education is not required for drivers, it directly impacts their ability to get certified since drivers must pass a DOT physical from a certified examiner to be eligible for employment.
